1- commercial or stock I would say.

2- I don't know if it has a name but it's popular with actors and studios for documentation.

For example, the BBC burned quite a few originals of Dr. Who at some point while trying to free up space in their archives. now they are scrambling to recover them from foreign tv stations and peoples attics (old BETA tapes and the likes). But they also were able to get a bunch of stills from some of the episodes and still have the audio so they allowed people to recreate the shows using stills.

Sorry, off topic a bit.
References :
Second is the stills snapper.
References :
There are lots of books available that can teach you the mechanics of photography. I am not sure that anyone or anything can teach you to be an artist. The difference between a photographer that just takes pictures and one that produces artistic pictures is the difference between someone that earns some money in photography and someone that earns a real living in photography. Go to the library, get some books on photography and learn the mechanics. Then learn how to SEE the art side of it.
The College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn has an excellent photography department. One of the instructors lives in Elgin, so the drive can't be too bad.
References :
Some community colleges give AS or AA degrees in photography. Within the curriculum both traditional and digital classes are taught.

My guess is that it will be a long time before a specific degree in "digital photography" will be granted.

There are degrees in digital media which includes all forms of digital art, photography, video and sound recording as well as those mediums processing .
References :
proFotog

Have you ever tried google's picasa? It is really nice because it finds every photo on your computer and organizes them. You can also edit and do some designing in it.
References :
picasa.google.com/

Being a staff photographer is better in some cases than being a self-employed freelancer. The only problem is that the available positions are few and far between, and generally limited to news media, portrait studios, cruise liners, large corporations (who may have their own PR department), the military, law enforcement, etc. If you're REALLY good, you can be a Yahoo! Answers Top Contributor in Photography, but the downside is it doesn't pay anything. ;-)

If you're planning on studying photography at uni, I would recommend taking courses in all different forms of photography so that you can try them on for size. Way back when I was first getting started, I worked as a freelancer and did a few photojournalism jobs. Being faced with the cold, hard reality of life (and being expected to photograph it!) was enough to convince me that I needed to pursue a different direction.

Career advisors at your local schools, colleges, and universities will be able to help you decide what to do.

Whatever you choose, commit yourself to doing the very best job you can with it, and you will be successful.

I hope this helps! Good luck!
