Budget for the camera and lenses should range from $500 on up (if possible. If not go with what you are comfortable with.) Get several different lenses, it allows you more flexibility with your shots

You can select from any of the brands:
Sony, Canon, Nikon etc.
You should first check out their websites for the features and prices of their cameras.

I would buy a 35mm SLR from Nikon,Canon and or Pentax less then 15 years old. Then go register for classes in Photography and business. Starting a photography business can be a reality but you need to go to school and get lots of experience. While your in school I would look into becoming an intern at a private studio and get hands on Darkroom and Post processing skills as well as shooting all types subjects and events.

NIKON and only Nikon. Nikon D300 is a bit pricey around $1700, but is great at high ISO’s with less noise. If you can’t afford that get a D200 or anything below it in their SLR series. The reason why I mention Nikon D200 and D300 is because the camera body is made of magnesium alloy. That way it won’t break into a hundred pieces like canon if you drop it. Color quality is better. Also, I heard that either tomorrow, or during the Olympics, that Nikon is to announce the New D400, or D4. That would be even better but probably going to cost around 2k to 2500 for the D400.
Also just because canon might have 12 mp verses 10 mp doesn’t make it a better camera. Quality, not size is important. The only thing canon might have better is like one more tilt lens which you won’t need unless you are a high end professional studio photographer. However, Nikon invented tilt lenses, so at least you know what they are doing with the ones they have.
People use canon because they know the name. Talk to most professionals, and they will recommend Nikon. Hence I said "Professional". Fujifilm, uses the same body as Nikon on some of their cameras but different sensors. I’ve used one and they have brilliant colors. They could be a little cheaper. I’ve used almost everything, so I’m just giving you what I know from experience and with working with other professionals, and yes I’ve use canon, nikon, and fuji.
If you really want a head start, buy a used film camera with a couple lenses from ebay or someone of the like. Maybe a Nikon N80 or something, and no it doesn’t have to be nikon. This way it will help you learn how to use a lens, dealing with aperture, shutter speed, f-stop, and focusing. Film may be a fading breed, but you can’t beat the darkroom and watching your photos come to life.
Also the professional line of Nikon sells the D3. However you can buy like 3 D300’s for that price, and I don’t think it is any better. Especially if you buy a grip for the D300, and you got a better camera. However, someone mentioned the D4 would get over 20mb. Still that is going to cost a pretty penny.
Always get a backup camera, extra batteries, and storage. Most importantly get a couple nice lenses. One for macro, one for long range, and one for fun (fish eye for example). Fisheye, wide angle, and many more lenses can cost you well over $500 each. Storage for CF, can be bought for like $25 for a 4 gb drive.
So in summary, find around 3-5k and buy what you can and keep moving up. If not, start more simple and work up from there. Good luck.

You first have to ask yourself what type of photography you will be doing and that will determine your equipment. I would suggest either Nikon or Canon as they have the largest range of camera bodies, lenses, flash guns etc. ie they have the most complete systems. If you are serious about being a professional then from Nikon you are looking at the D300 or the D3. From Canon you might consider the 5D or the new 40D. lenses vary a lot in terms of quality and price but a great all purpsose lense from Nikon is the 24-70 f2.8
