How to start a business by photography as a teenager?

January 26th, 2010 by admin

I recently bought quite a good digital camera and i love taking photos, especially landscapes and animals. And i would like to sell some of these or at least become known in the local community as a photographer while earning money. Im 13 by the way.
So just anyways to achieve becoming known locally or selling photos or other type of idea would REALLY help.
Thanks. :)

If you are wanting to get your profile out there you need to advertise, (Fairly obvious) you have an advantage being 13 yrs old, put a flyer or two out in vets and pet shops, add a couple of your photo’s to it to show the quality of your photo’s, give a discount and explain what you are about and where you want to get to. Visit dog shows or animal shows, farms and parks are good for birds. Swans make good photo’s I have quite a good selection. I don’t know where you are so i can’t help you with landscapes, but any country has a good selection of landscapes. I’m lucky, I live near the Yorkshire dales and there is some stunning landscape material out there.

Shoot your photos of animals on your P setting that way you will blur the background to give a more stunning picture. Good luck with your project you will get a lot of enjoyment from it. I know I do. Experiment and takes notes on all your camera settings until you can do it without thinking. If you get some on flicker or some other site come back and let us know so we can see how your doing.

PLEASE…
Please be careful and make sure you have an adult accompany you if someone contacts you.
Let your parents know when someone contacts you, make sure they are happy you for you to give out a phone number, sadly we live in an era when caution has to be the priority.

Good Luck…….

Landscape and animal photos might be sold to the people who produce calendars. You might need to get some legal documents before you can start any kind of business. Check with your friends and relatives and see if any of them would be willing to pay you for your photos. eg portraits, modelling shoots. Special events also earn you some money. Make yourself available for weddings, birthday parties and stuff like that. Create a web site and display your best photos on it. Get yourself a business name and produce business cards that you can hand out to potential customers.

Offer to take pictures of peoples pets. Get a gimmick for example Anne Geddess (or is it Geddes?) takes pictures of babies who are often asleep wearing flower, insect, or animal costumes. She now has a very large following.
