Does anyone have their own photography studio?
Home or Business?
How did you get started?
Digital?
What camera do you use?
any helpful info you could give me?
I’m in love with photography and have been all my life! I have actually done a few weddings and some portraits. I have some people at work that want me to do their pictures too. I just want to get started on having my own business and I don’t know where to start. I currently have Canon Rebel and am getting ready to purchase the Digital Rebel too … Where should I get the printed for cheapest and how much should I charge for pictures? See, I need help, serious advise! ![]()
I have what I call a "portable studio".
My mom has a enlarger, and I have an enlarger. I’ve got a bunch of dryers. And normally we’ll set up in our laundry room because it’s got no windows, and we can easily change the lightbulb.
We use film cameras. I normally use a Pentax K-1000, and my mom uses a Nikon N65.
The first thing you should know about developing photos and such is: how to use the enlarger, what paper to buy, what chemicals to buy, and how long to leave each print in each chemical.

Making a home studio can be easy and done for a small investment. Renting space can be a real headache, but if you are serious you need to look into it.
They way to figure out how much to charge is to go to other photo studios in your area and find out what they charge. Don’t tell them you want to start a business, just get rates as if you are a customer.
As far as equipment, you can email me. It is a lot to go into here, but I will say that I work all digital now.

I want to know the same thing and have a half-sister that has her own studio but I have yet to receive a response from her. She may be the type that wants us to do it the hard way like she has had to do with trial and error. She does beautiful work. There were 8 kids in our family and the first 4 of us were farmed out or put up for adoption. She was the 7th child and didn’t know about the rest of us until 9 or so years ago. I believe she was born around 1907. In any case, her not wanting much contact with me or the other half-siblings may keep me from receiving an answer. If I learn anything I would love to email you even after this question closes, my profile is open to receive email so you can email me if you are interested in what I find out later. I am going to email her again to see if she just missed my last email.
In the meantime, there may be a small business grant available for you so be sure to check it out at the library before you purchase any grant programs as some of them sell you outdated lists available through the library reference book section. The business details, regarding opening one, licensing, etc. should be available through your state offices where you register business names and from small business assistance offices at colleges. You may want to take photography courses at a local community college as well.
