Photography business – How has digital changed your studio?

November 27th, 2009 by admin

Since 35mm SLR cameras have switched from film to digital, how has this changed the way you do business

We are able to put previews on line within 24 hours and they can be shared around the world. Many orders placed on line.

We have not had to replace our cameras or lap tops yet (6 Canon 30D’s).

Shooting tethered we have far fewer package errors.

Better retouching.

    My overhead has increased exponentially

While for the client who still need transparencies, I can use my old 8×10, 4×5 view or 35 mm cameras. There are still enough markets that still need film so I still keep them.

The cameras mentioned above have been used for decades and rarely have to be replaced. The last 35 mm SLR I had to purchase was a Nikon F5 and only cost about $2000 (what my first Nikon D100 cost when I first entered the DSLR world)

Digital camera bodies on the other hand must be replaced every 18 to 24 months at a cost of from $5,000 to $8,000 each. And of course the is the little issue a absolutely having to buy 2 new computers every two years (one desktop and one notebook) with appropriate software (The latest Photoshop versions, MS Office Suite, Photo Mechanic and others with licensing for both computers)
